For every 2000 hero levels (altogether) you have when you ascend, you get a single hero soul (up to a maximum of 10). A later game hero named Amenhotep has a 'skill' called ASCENSION. (FYI this question has been asked and answered a number of time in the past couple of days - there needs to be a wiki :) )
